The Minuscule but not Negligible publisher of books of lasting value.
Bullbrier is an old-time name for a thorny, weedy vine (Smilax rotundifolia) of the Lily Family, also known as Catbrier, Horsebrier, or Greenbrier.
Like its namesake, Bullbrier Press can be a bit thorny at times - often only a recording at our end of the telephone line, for example - but we are a lily at heart. Every FAX, telephone, or email message will receive prompt, personal, intelligent attention.
Bullbrier aims to survive in the competitive world of publishing by producing books of integrity and lastingly useful content, each of which we intend to keep in print and in stock for many years. We are a minuscule publisher, but not negligible.
We do little advertising and sell only to individuals and retailers, avoiding the extra costs, rigidities, errors, and forms inherent in dealing with middle-men. Bullbrier depends on those who use our books to recommend them.
We value your interest in our publications and hope you will invite us to serve you as we approach our eighteenth year in the book publishing business.

Devil On The Deep Blue Sea
The Notorious Career of Captain Samuel Hill of Boston
By Mary Malloy
|
Paperback, 314 pp., 20 color maps and figures, bibliographic references, fully indexed. ISBN 987-0-9722854-1-4. $24
Had he not been a madman, Captain Samuel Hill would likely be remembered as one of the great maritime adventurers of the early nineteenth century. He was the first American to live in Japan, and was in the Columbia River basin at the same time as Lewis & Clark. He rescued men held captive by Indians and pirates, met King Kamehameha of Hawaii and the missionaries who arrived soon after the King's death, was captured as a privateer during the War of 1812, witnessed firsthand the events of the Chilean Revolution, and wrote about all this persuasively. He was also a rapist and murderer.
In all his contradictions and complexities, Samuel Hill represented the fledgling United States during its first wave of expansion. At home he appeared civilized and sensible, but as he sailed into the Pacific Ocean the mask slipped away to reveal the recklessness, ambition, and violence that propelled the United States from coast to coast and around the world.
"Mary
Malloy has enthralled a generation of students at SEA with her ability to bring
maritime studies to life by putting the story in history. Her considerable
experience sailing the high seas on SEA's tall wind-driven ships, her impeccable
research, and her natural ability to spin a yarn combine seamlessly so that we
all discover the lessons the maritime past holds for each and every one of us."

Here's How We'll Do It
An Informal History of the Construction of the Shoals Marine Laboratory
By John M. Kingsbury
|
Cloth, dust jacket; 363 pp., 197 B&W illustrations. Indexed. ISBN 0-9612619-3-X. $17 A collection of first-person Maine Coast stories illustrating vivid imagination and persistence in overcoming bureaucratic obstacles involving the workings of college presidents, U.S. senators, fishermen, officials of major state and federal agencies, the Supreme Court, two governors, and the paramount bete noir, Aristotle Socrates Onassis. "A fascinating tale-in-detail of the conception, birth, and early years of the Shoals Marine Laboratory. The seas were often rough between the very real mainland and the school of marine sciences for undergraduates. From the beginnings the students were and have remained the project's strongest supporters. To learn how they did it, you must read this book. It is heart warming. [The author] writes well, too." Seaweeds of Cape Cod and the Islands
By John M. Kingsbury and Philip Sze, Cornell and Georgetown Universities.
|
Laminated paper covers; 223 pp., 111 B&W illustrations by Edward and Marcia Norman. ISBN 0-9612610-7-2. $25
This copiously illustrated reference to the identification of the seaweeds specifically of Cape Cod, Marthas Vineyard, and Nantucket is generally representative of the northeast American coast. Descriptions are accompanied by essays on the reproduction, classification, economics, and ecology of non-tropical marine algae. Individual algae are illustrated as they appear in nature in over 100 full-page black and white drawings by the noted Cape Cod artists Marcia and Edward Norman. The authors have revised the text of the first edition extensively and brought it fully up to date with the latest scientific discoveries. This easy-to-carry paperback edition is suitable for use at the seashore.
"This book will certainly help the inexperienced seaweed collector and will also be of interest to marine biologists who are not especially familiar with the northeastern seaweed flora. The illustrations are remarkable because of their ability to convey the sense or feel of the living seaweed." John J. Gaudet |

Descent From Niitaka, First Flag Over Japan
by Robert D. Miller
Paperback, 338 pp., 134 b&w illustrations, index, and bibliography. ISBN 0-9722854-0-7. $19
|
Here are the thoughtful, detailed memoirs of a WWII Air Corps meteorologist converted to air traffic and air defense controller who latterly became a member of the unique "Flying Circus." MacArthur’s leap-frog campaign took the author from New Guinea to Japan in three amphibious and three airborne operations and included his detached service as a lieutenant in the Air Force who stood daily watches conning a Navy destroyer on combat patrol in mined waters during an invasion. In these capacities he dealt with air raids, red alerts, distressed aircraft, etc., and ultimately with the initial occupation of Japan. Extracts from a detailed journal and letters to his wife (a Naval officer of superior rank), augmented by commentary from the vantage of 60 years later, and from cited sources, present an intensely personal story of the Pacific Campaign, which peaks when the author, one of an advanced party of “technicians,” hoisted the first American flag over mainland Japan two days before combat troops began the actual armed occupation on August 30, 1945. This historic flag is now on permanent display in the National D-Day Museum in New Orleans, LA.
"I am again moved by the story just as much as I was when I first read the manuscript. Those were remarkable days and Robert Miller was right there in the middle of it ..." Dale Corson, Technical Adviser to The Air Communications Officer, U.S. Army Air Corps, 1942-1945; President Emeritus, Cornell University. |

Because the naked mole-rat lives in underground burrows, few people have ever seen one in the wild. This award-winning book reveals the scientific mind at work, showing the fascinating story of how biologists searched for clues to explain the mystery of the naked mole-rat’s behavior. |
